30 tons of cannabis grabbed in Mexico canal bust

The Mexico canal is not exactly a marvel of engineering. The Mexico tunnel is a weed smuggling passageway linking San Diego and Tijuana. The Feds came down on the 1,800-foot long Mexico tunnel this week and seized 30 tons of pot.

Mexico tunnel might are dug by a drug cartel

The Mexico tunnel was a path between warehouses in San Diego and Tijuana. Drug smugglers stored their stashes in these warehouses. The sophistication of the Mexico tunnel and the cost of digging it suggests that the operation is associated with a Mexican drug cartel. Tuesday was when the Drug Enforcement Agency began its investigation. It only happened because, near the Mexican border, a semi-trick that looked suspicious had been leaving a warehouse in an industrial area. A Border Patrol checkpoint stopped the truck. Inside, 10 tons of marijuana had been found. The DEA agents were then responsible to raid the warehouse to determine what had been there. Another 10 to 15 tons of weed were found.

Finding $20 million in pot

A closet in a small opening in the floor had been where the DEA agents found the Mexico tunnel. The passageway that was found had been lighted and ventilated. It had been 20 feet under the ground and six football fields long. Another warehouse in Mexico was at the end of the tunnel. Mexican authorities were alerted and another 4 tons of marijuana were seized south of the border. The DEA estimates marijuana it confiscated is worth $20 million on the street.

Drug traffic won't stop

The Mexico tunnel is one of many found since a crackdown on drug smuggling has forced the drug cartels underground. In Mexican history, the largest drug bust happen in Tijuana last month when Mexican authorities found 150 tons of marijuana. The Christian Science Monitor, nevertheless, questioned whether or not the recent seizures would make a difference in stemming the torrent of illegal drugs flowing across the border from Mexico to the U.S. The Monitor's Sarah Miller wrote her opinion on it. She said that the Mexican government has just a PR victory. Miller ended up with an angry letter from the Mexican U.S. ambassador because of this.
